About Twonky Server

Twonky Server is a commercial product from PacketVideo that shares music, pictures and videos via the UPnP AV protocol. It can also serve media from the following online services:

  • Picasa
  • Facebook
  • Youtube
  • Flikr
  • PhotoBucket
  • Shoutcast

The server is DLNA certified to ensure interoperability and currently the most widespread DLNA/UPnP server on the market with over 2 million device installs, an 80% marketshare and it's inclusion in almost all commercial NAS products [1]

Before we begin

Firstly, it's worth mentioning 2 things.

  • This is a commercial product, you will have to buy a license, however IMHO, it's well worth the asking price, as it vastly outperforms the opensource products like Fuppes and MediaTomb with much better stability, and much lower runtime resources. There is a free trial, so you can evaluate it's performance before you buy.
  • PacketVideo only directly support the Win32/Mac/Linux x86 builds, NAS builds are supported by the NAS manufacturers, but more exotic builds like ARM fall into the middle ground category. That said, they produce builds for a huge number of platforms including the Marvell Kirkwood platform, and they all get regular updates. If you get problems, the Twonky people are usually very helpful and there is a large user community on the Twonky Forums.
