I want to install a hard drive on the USB port and access it from Windows with Samba.
I can access at least one directory on the plug from Windows so I'm confident that side is working.
I can mount the hard drive and access it from the Linux login.

I can't change the permissions on the hard drive so windows can access it. What am I doing wrong or lacking? Chmod doesn't complain but nothing happens either.

I assume you used swat to set a file on the hard drive partition as a share for samba. Still doesn't work?

I'm a total newbie with regard to Linux and I had this same problem. My USB HD was brand new (empty) so the easiest fix for me was to reformat it using ext2 instead of the fat32 that it came with. Then all I had to do was chmod 777 to the drive and that worked for me.
