Terminal working over VNC?

Hi all,
Fairly new plugger here. I've got vnc up and running just fine. However, I can't get the terminal to work correctly. Xterm just brings up a blank window and I'm not able to type anything or see text. Any ideas?
Thanks

I couldn't get X to work either - but am hardly an expert. But did get gnome up and running properly.

Maybe these two posts might help (I haven't personally tried either):
