Got my SheevaPlug a while back, updated to the Alpha6 Installer, and latest 2.6.30.5 kernel image.

Installed TwonkyMedia 5.1 as my DLNA mediaserver for my home network serving media from a USB Western Digital Mybook Mirror (2TB) around my home to my PS3 and Noxon2 audio clients.  It also hosts a web facing HTTP server (LightHttpd), and does SAMBA filsharing aroound the home + other goodies like eSniper, and wTorrent (rTorrent with a WebUI).

I did a Wiki page on how to get TwonkyMedia kirkwood build running on SheevePlug..

Mgillespie,

I'm looking into getting a plug and the WD Mirror Edition 2TB for storage/backup purposes. I'm guessing that you were able to get the thing working well with the plug, and I have a question for you, if you don't mind.

Are you running it in Raid 1 mode (mirror), if so, how easy is it to set up? I haven't seen any information about it running on Linux anywhere.

Thanks in advance!

It comes setup as RAID1 Mirrored out of the box, so you don't need to to anything.  The mirroring magic is done by the chipset in the drive enclosure as it presented to the outside world as a single regular looking volume, that you can format how you wish.

It should be a case of plugging it in, creating your partitions and formatting.

The only downside, is you can't seed the RAID status from Linux (I haven't found a way at least).   It only comes with a Windows utility to do this.   Contacting Western Digital about Linux support is about as useful as Anne Frankes drumkit  Grin

That said it works well, and does the job, the drives are green, low power and very quiet.  However the ability to monitor the status from Linux is a little worrying, as I simply won't know when one of the mirrored drives needs replacing.   It's not a short term problem, but it will be a problem in the longer term.

As for my Sheeva Project, it's now also handling all my mail, using Postfix and Dovecot.  All my mail arrives on Sheeva, and is stored in MailDir format on the mirrored volume, and it's served up across my several PC's via IMAP.   It also hosts roundcube webmail for external access to my mail.

I realize it might be a lot of work but could you write a howto? There is so much confusing info on the web about setting up a  mailserver. Now i use imap to read the mail on the isp server, but they don't provide any backup of email.
Basically i just want a sort of backup solution. Once or twice a day the sheeva collects mail from my isp and puts them in a maildir. Just in case of problems with my isp i can retrieve the mail from my sheeva. It would also be nice if i could synchronize the mailbox on the sheeva with the mailboxes on the isp so mail i deleted on purpose from the isp server is also deleted from my backup on the sheeva. I understood that imapsync is a nice program for that.

Hi,

I intend to move my mail server (sendmail) over to my Sheeva tomorrow or the next day.  The write-up will be in my usual place if it's any use to you:
