Using a 8GB generic fine with ext3 noatime,commit=600 on 2.6.31 (and the 2.6.30.X) kernel.

And now I've just upgraded to a 32GB SanDisk (class 2) 'SDSDB-032G-E11' card this afternoon, again no problem setting it up via a USB adaptor and then plugging it into the SheevaPlug slot.

I bought it retail off the shelf (PC World) and I could have either saved a bunch of money or bought a faster one for the same had I bought it online I guess, but it was useful to see the physical object in front of me, and the first time I'd seen the full 32GB available in the flesh.

Kingston 4GB SDHC class 4 card works fine but is kind of slow.

I was going to just buy an 8GB one of those now but since you said it was slow i might buy some thing else.
