A quick hello from a new member...

Hi Y'All!

I recently received my SheevaPlug with the intent of moving my main Internet-facing services/servers onto it.

This is part of a longer-term project where what was 700W of Solaris servers has been condensed onto one ~20W Linux laptop partially run from a small off-grid solar system.  With the SheevaPlug I hope to get to well under 7W and run off solar all the time.

Quick initial question: I'm sure I saw it in here while lurking but can no longer see it: I want to minimise (idle) power consumption with the tickless kernel: which is the most 'standard' setup that gives me tickless, eg does the stock Ubuntu?  (It's newer than my Feisty/Gutsy x86 tickless laptop kernel.)

Hi,

Use Sheevaplug installer alpha-6 to install kernel 2.6.30-rcX which supports cpuidle framework and tickless kernel.

It will considerably lower the power consumption in idle.

Yay, a common goal, though I want to run my plug on solar power in a simple household. The panels are lying around in my living room, as soon as the renovations are done I'm going to hook them up.

What Wattage of panels and capacity/voltage of battery do you have?  (Mine are ~120Wp and 40Ah/12V.)

We have 3 Suntech STP 200 panels, so 200 Wp and 33,4V. No idea how many amp-hour.

Hi,

Is there any expected/likely difference in power-saving between 2.6.30.2 (as in the V1.0 installer) and 2.6.30.6?

If not, I'll stick with the sort-of hybrid I seem to have constructed, since I seem not to be getting all the way to .6 at the moment.
