Standard Plug Wifi Install

I have successfully updated my standard plug to the latest 3.4.4 kernel.  I did then need to update my sources.list to:

...in order to install or update anything.

In trying to install an Edimax EW-7811Un usb wifi adapter, I get the following dmesg:

So wlan0 is nowhere - don't know where to go from here?

You need to install the relevant firmware file.  Which (judging by what I have on my mandriva2011 system) will be:
   /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin
Now, as to where you can get the firmware files - it's in the firmware-realtek package, so:
   apt-get install firmware-realtek
should get it.
If not, the actual deb file is at:
 ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-realtek_0.36_all.deb

First, thanks very much birdman for your reply and all of the work that you do on this forum.

Second, I got impatient (sorry) and installed Debian on a sd card thinking that might solve my problem.  Still no wlan of any variety.  Here's what I get:

I was able to install wireless-tools and firmware-realtek, but still no wlan of any flavor.

I've tested the usb dongle on windows (and a PC-Linux machine) and know that it works.

Is that the only file in /lib/firmware/rtlwifi?  There should be 4 rtl8192* files as well (and it should also have put RTL8192SU, RTL8192E and rtl_nic directories under /lib/firmware too).

However, the relevant thing is whether you end up with a wlan0 device.  I presume that ifconfig isn't showing anything (and that is what you mean when you say "but still no wlan of any flavor")?

What kernel are you using?  I have a dual-band Buffallo Wireless-N Nfiniti running on mine, and that needed a 3.x kernel to get it going (so I run the cbxbiker61 kernels).  That also needed a firmware file (rt2870.bin, but I had to get the one from the kernel git download last October to get that running).
