I was convinced that u-Boot always detected the onboard micro SD as device 0 and the external SD as device 1.
I have a Samsung externally powered 2TB usb drive that is detected as device 0,  (uSD is 1, SD=2) so of course the default environment will not boot when this USB device is attached.

So does anyway know what influences u-Boot device ordering on the Dreamplug or how I might work around this issue?

do you try not connect wih extrernal usb device to boot up , it work?

No it was not tested.  But the first partition was fat and it tried to fatload from it. So I guess that would work.
