Help me with samba shares

Hi
Wanna share my two external usb drives with samba but only the one is shared. Both drives are normally mounted at boot.
Here is my smb.conf regarding these drives

[external]
   comment = WD
   browseable = yes
   writeable = yes
   path = /media/wd
   guest ok = yes

[external2]
   comment = seagate
   browseable = yes
   writeable = yes
   path = /media/500gb
   guest ok = yes

Any ideas?

Have you looked at the File Permissions of both drives.

The File Permission override the share Permissions, you could share what you can`t see .

chmod 777 /media/500gb    gives me thischmod 777 /media/500gb/
chmod: changing permissions of `/media/500gb/': Read-only file system

maybe i need to format this drive

Or maybe you mounted it read-only.
Could you give the results of 'mount' and 'ls -ld /media/500gb'?
Also samba should write some stuff in a log file, look in all relevant logs in /var/log.

I think the drive is in NTFS !!!
that`s why it is so slow and why you are in read only.
It all depends on what kernel and modules installed, if you can mount it read/write

If the drive is only for linux and not going between linux and windows , format it ex3

o.k ,just been doing a little testing to show my point :-

Esata drive formatted ex3

dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/sda1/output.img bs=8k count=256k         
262144+0 records in
262144+0 records out
2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 32.921 s, 65.2 MB/s

usb drive formatted ntfs

dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmp/output.img bs=8k count=256k
262144+0 records in
262144+0 records out
2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 316.165 s, 6.8 MB/s

The slow speed is mostly down to ntfs and not usb, but ntfs and usb looks a real killer .

Using USB for both (rather than esata for ext3 and USB for ntfs) I get slightly closer figures - 27.8MB/s (for ext4) vs 8.5 MB/s (for ntfs).
Perhaps not too surprising, given that ntfs is a Windows, rather than a Unix, file system, and that it's running through fuse.

The read rates were closer - 28.0MB/s vs 24.4MB/s
