Voiceserver for Gamers (Murmur / Mumble)

Hi guys. i always tried to get a Teamspeak Server running on my old Buffalo Linkstation 1 and my LSPro.....i was not successful.

on the nslu2 it also did not work:

But hey, maybe it works on the sheevaplug.

I ordered my sheevaplug about a week ago...but i am too curious....can someone install qemu and then try to start the x86 linux tarball from

it would be perfect for all gamers to have a simple teamspeak server for talking with friends while playing with them online MMORPGs or any other game via the internet.

i hope it works....anyone?

Additionally to the above someone could just try to install murmur - which is the voiceserver for mumble (both opensource):

mumble could run natively then....compared to teamspeak / ventrillo which both are closed source and x86 only.

it would be nice to know if it performs good enough or not. the question is if it is possible to connect with more than 3 users and still have a low latency.

i just noticed that ubuntu & angstrom & optware have no packages for murmur (the mumble server)....so debian and gentoo are left as options for direkt installation or compiling it manually from source.
i guess debian is the most easiest way to try murmur/mumble then.

Got mine now too, I'm interested in teh ideas above. Murmur is great and opensource.

i have received my sheevaplug today. too bad that at the time i ordered there where no EU versions available....but whatever

i will try to install murmur on the stock ubuntu OS....later i plan to move to a late debian/ubuntu server with up2date kernel. i will report back if there are any problems installing murmur on the different OS versions.

I just looked at the TeamSpeak Linux server, and I'm quite sure that the binary package they send it in will only run on x86.  Since the SheevaPlug uses an ARM processor, there's no easy eay to get TeamSpeak running.  Your best bet would be running a full emulator, such as QEMU.

Just another advantage of open source software -- you can compile it anywhere.

thats why i suggested murmur, the mumble server. just starting up the plug the first time in a few mins...

a quick update: it was absolutely not problem to install murmur by executing

apt-get install mumble-server

the main problem is to configure it. there are several webfrontends available....so you need to install a webserver as well. i installed apache2 and noticed a steep learning curve regarding apache2 configuration..... so far i connected from a windows machine and it worked properly. will check what happens to the CPU utilization when i connect with more than 4 clients.

have you checked CPU by now? My plug's not shipped yet, but I also want to run a voiceserver. Hope it runs smooth with more than 4 clients (about 8 or so). Also, what quality did you use for audio bitrate? Thx in advance.

Once you have the ability to talk to your server via the web, you can install a web interface, like this one:

As a side, are you installing plain murmur?
