Which ARM toolchain ?

Which ARM toolchain (gcc cross compiler and tools) do you use on x86 Linux and Windows systems ?

I saw Ubuntu 10.04 has various packages for ARM (openocd, emulators) but not gcc for arm.

How can I compile open uboot for guruplug without gcc ?

The embedded linux development kit (ELDK) has excellent toolchains for various platforms (for x86 Linux hosts). It even comes with a native system (all common tools, compilers, etc.) that you can nfs-boot from.

I can recommend compiling your own crosscompiler. Follow instructions @ http://wiki.debian.org/BuildingCrossCompilers. It's mostly straightforward, some packages have to be downloaded manually (the wiki tells you how).

Having the toolchain in packaged form makes it easy to uninstall/upgrade.

If I am not mistaken emdebian project have precompiled packages including the toolchain you can download/use? Last time i found GDB precompiled targeted at ARM runnable on x86.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Will this cross-compiler run on any Linux host, or is it restricted to a specific distro?
2. How to set it up? After unzipping the file, there are two directories: gcc/ and rootfsv1.0/. How do we go from this to a running binary of "Hello,world!"?
