Hey!
I wonder if there's some kind of a free, good looking http frontend to access my files (e.g. pictures, music,...). Basically I backup all my files (documents as well as media files) on the plug and I want something that offers me the ability to access them over the web (a optimised view for my mobile browser would be nice too) in a comfortable manner. It should be something like the frontends of all these online storage services like humyo or dropbox, so something with a nice image gallery, maybe the ability to stream a music file, etc. . Maybe you know something like this?!

The absolutely easiest way is to use just a webserver without any of these fancy content management systems; either lighttpd or apache will do, others might work too. You're going to have to install a webserver first anyways, so give it a shot.
For lighttpd, you just need to edit the configuration file (/etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf) so that its document root (called "server.document-root" in the config) points to the folder in which all your files are stored, and make sure directory listings ("server.dir-listing", I think) are enabled. Then, when you connect to your plug through a web browser, it should make all the files in that directory (and all directories below it) available for download. To upload, you'll need a fancier system, but one step at a time, right?

There is an HTTP protocol extension for this purpose: WebDAV. I'm aware of two implementations you might want to check out: BarracudaDrive Web Server (for SheevaPlug , NSLU2, et al) and an Apache module if you're looking to roll your own. |

I'm a Tonido user. While 90% of their applications are useless, it's FANTASTIC for browsing files and also creating quick share-points for friends to access. For $20, i like supporting them.
