Can anyone who works for Marvall give us all a realistic  indication of when this Plug  Computer 3.0 is going in to be available for general purchase?

We are going to stick a pin in the calender and say November! - please dispute this Smiley

I would say you're not far off. I work for one of Marvell's distributors. They haven't even given us a spec sheet yet for the Armanda CPU and proto samples are hard to come by. So min of 12 weeks to produce the IC after protos approved. Then designer must design and integrate their design which is about 18-20 weeks, so we are looking at probably Christmas.

But doesn't Ionics already have a website with some new models up?

The new models they are showing on the website are what they intend to produce, i don't think they have any working models as yet.

Sure, right now two thing bugs most, one is set up web site to support, second is to have nice interface for the setup. The reason I bring this is because you kind of hit the first one. I know how to setup website but I don't know how to produce content.

Anyway, My intended distribution setup is targeted to an appliance model. the basic setup is union-ed rootfs, core system in NAND and all changes store in SD/USB storage. At this time the union setup is static in a sense it scan for fixed LABEL on file system then it will union them into rootfs then boot from there. I want to make it dynamic in the future so you can have SD/USB plug in the system will know how to set it up Cheesy

The build is base on GENTOO. core system include openldap, samba, iscsi (target/initiator), mysql, fetchmail and some other small stuff I cann't remember off my head. currently one plugin module, it is GENTOO's portage build system. I plan to build two more module, one is X window client (may be VNC server), the other will be some sort of multimedia system. they are base on my friend's requirement.

Let me know if you have suggestion Smiley

you're actually doing an amazing job i would suggest you to add maybe a client torrent (deluge not trasmission).

But i think that an interface user friendly for installation/restoration is alredy enough.

I'm not completely new in linux (i've used many ubuntu desktop version and debian on nslu2) but i've never tried GENTOO but if you will complete your distro i surely use that

A little off-topic here.. What's better about deluge? Why not transmission? I quite like the remote web interface of transmission, but I do see it not working worth a darn with magnet links, so I'm interested in alternatives.. Sorry about the topic diversion, such is life in a message forum.. Wink

yeah we are a little ot Cheesy... I've tried both transmission and deluge but i chose deluge because transmission doesn't download files properly: the download speed with transmission when comes to 50 kb/s freeze and the jumps back to 2-3kb/s instead with deluge i download the same file much more quickly

Strange.. I was holding a steady 700K/sec with Transmission last night, downloading to a USB hard drive. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get Deluge to work for me.. I had to install over 250megs of dependencies just to get it installed and kind of running. I still can't get it to actually work. Seems like Transmission is a lot lighter in that regard.

I think your assumption is very wrong. I was at the CES2010 and saw the product models running with my own eyes. In fact the Plug Computer 3.0 being demoed by Marvell was made by Ionics (I've confirmed this independently and it's true) and surely everyone has to agree the Ionics Plug Computer 3.0 is running? I have pictures that I took to prove it.

What was really interesting was that not only Ionics had a tarpaulin diaplay to show all their models (as descrbved in http://www.ionicsplug.com ), but they also had a small  carry case that showed all "7 servers in a small bag". Cool idea to emphaize their small footprint designs Cheesy (6 are actually running and 1 was a mockup - Cumulus if I remembered correctly). There's even a really cute 4-port USB version of their ultra compact Plug streaming 3-4 USB Webcams simultaneously - to show off their highly quality USB design.

Plug Cpmputer 3.0
The Plug Computer 3.0 as shown by Marvell was also displayed inside this small demo case. For sure it was a working unit and was even streaming videos via WiFi. They also showed Bluetooth Music streaming off another model and claimed it is the same WiFI/BT chipset so the Plug Computer 3.0 can do the same.

You can see the Plug Computer 3.0 in the bottom row, on the left.

Plug Comnputer 2.0
Also I saw a video of a Marvell staff introducing the Plug Cpmputer 2.0 http://armdevices.net/2010/01/19/sheeva-plug-2-0-and-plug-computer-3-0-at-ces-2010/. It looks exactly like the Ionics Small tiny plug and even bears their logo!

Could they have also made this? From the Ionics website, the Chip is the same as that for the Plutg Compuyter 3.0 anyway. So guess one can infer from there....
