Edit: Please jump to the 8th post below for current information. (Or press ctrl+F and type CRC)

Oh, dear...

I tried to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.32.1, but something went screw-y and now botting only gets to the "Uncompressing Linux (insert a gazillion "."'s) done, booting the kernel."

Any tips on how to resolve this?

I suspect that the bootargs might be off, because changing them was the last thing I did before it all went downhill. The current ones are:
Quote
bootargs console=ttyS0,115200=rw root=/dev/mtdblock1

and the boot-up looks like this:

Would you please print your environment from the U-Boot prompt and post it here?  Thanks.

Just take out the "=rw" in console=ttyS0,115200=rw" will give you console back. if you want to set readonly for your root file system put the word "ro" in its own, no need to have "=" sign in front of it.

OK, which commands should I use to get it all out?

IO just had a thought: what if I turned "mainlineLinux=off"? I tried it and now the plug manages to boot the kernel, but then has a load of errors and finally panicks - at least that's some improvement.

Here is the new printout:

Tried changing root in bootargs to /dev/mtdblock2 and now the plug seems to be alive again, if only just. (The error list is longer than Rapunzel's hair, but I can log in.)

I'm now trying to apt-get a fresh kernel, but apt-get isn't working:

...aaand when I restart the plug, it fails to boot because there's a CRC error.

It doesn't matter if I use /dev/mtdblock2 och /dev/mmcbk0p1 (yes, I do have a memory card) in bootargs and bootargs_root.

I'm beginning to give up here.

In your first post, the output is reasonable, all the later onc have mixed linux kernel output and uboot output I wonder how do you manage to do that?

Did you ran resetenv? it seems to me you have revert everything back to compile time default. you will need to use the sheeva-installaler to reflash uboot to start over again.

Sorry, I did not mean to ask you to run resetenv, I just want to know if you did or not. anyway now it is too late Sad

From your output as far as I can decode you are using kernel that come with plug am I right? have you try to use sheeva-installer? there is no information from your post to tell me which version of uboot you are using.

you can try to post output of version so we can see which uboot you are using.

Please note I suggest you figure out the problem with terminal output first before you use sheeva-installer, in case it is relate to your connection from your host to sheeva the sheeva-installer can totally mess up you plug.

No offence taken. At least it attempts to start now. Wink

I'm using the plug as it came out of the box. No change to kernel or u-boot.

The terminal output garbling is an effect of HyperTerminal being unable to correctly display lines that have been pushed out of the normal viewing window; when I see the text scroll by during boot-up, it looks fine, but when I go back in the terminal window to copy the text, some lines are intermingled.

Personal reflection (No need for anyone to answer this):
Why did Globalscale choose u-boot over Grub? In comparison, u-boot is a hideous, uncontrollable monstrosity.[/]

I don't know much of the uboot version that come out of box but as far as I know it is very limit in term for supporting use of sheeva plug.

From other threads I think you dislike use of sheeva installer. if that is true there may be some other way can bring your system to more supported state. do you familiar with the concept of network boot? it is possible to setup newer version of uboot from a tftpserver. I think the wiki page have howto on this topic.
