ntfs-3g 2009.2.1 write performance slow, is apt-get for ver 2009.3.8 available ?

I got some write performance issues to my WD USB external drive using ntfs-3g.  Web page:
http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#dd says use 2009.3.8 minimum, 2009.4.4 is last stable version with some performance improvements. 

I want to keep my USB drive NTFS so I can still use in winXP directly if I need to and FAT32 no good due to filesize limit, ext2/3 support is flakey with windows.

If anybody can get for me or know if I can install a later sheeva plug version as apt-get installed ntfs-3g 2009.2.1 for me.

I checked my network speeds, iperf approx 400Mb/s both ways using gigabit ethernet @ 1000Mbs full duplex.

Checked with a 1GB file

Writes direct from sheeva to USB were 7.4MB/s, reads much better 22.6MB/s

Network remote writes using samba were of course slower @ 6MB/s and reads 13MB/s

As an update, I made a 100MB ext3 partition and read write performance is good. Same speed both ways, read/write a 1GB file @ 20-23MBytes/s which is very acceptable, see graph below for network drive to an XP laptop and a little faster using FTP.  Still waiting for latest ntfs-3g which will fix ntfs performance, unless someone has any ideas.



I also found an unpowered USB hub that works with the sheeva (2 other hub tried and did not work or only 12Mb/s ), the belkin F5U231vuk1  is working fine in high speed 480Mb/s.

I am not optimistic about the NTFS performance in Linux. It is running on user space so CPU load is very high. I have been testing it for a while then just gave it up.

If you want to share the USB HHD with Windows machine, you should use FAT32 but you will be limited to 4GB file size.

I end up choose Ext4. I am still looking for a good program that will let me read/write Ext4 HDD in Windows.
