16  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: New plug - D2 on: May 25, 2011, 04:09:38 PM
The Dreamplug runs a 1.2 GHz Marvel arm5 core. The D2 runs an 800 MHz arm7 core.

There is a big price difference between the two (~$100).

Other than the HDMI output there doesn't seem to be a big difference between the units capabilities.

There are ~ $110 AMD boards that have better GPUs and better dual core CPUs though the form factor for them is not as nice as the plugs.

For $149 you can buy this unit, <http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Compact-Multimedia-Giada-N3/dp/B004QIRBEK/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2BLKEWW74FF7J&colid=2SMXHOV1FAKEE>, that features NVidia ION graphics.

It seems like the D2 faces a lot of competition in its price range.

What is the graphics performance like? I was wondering if the new "D2" plug would make a good mythtv box. Of course you can get a cheaper used laptop or atom motherboard with an nvidia chip for much cheaper than the D2!

I saw this today:

<http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/c-8-d2plug.aspx>

The $249 price seems high. Anyone know what the performance of the graphics system is like?

The performance of the Guruplug Display has not been reported in this forum to be any good so I don't have high hopes for this device.

19  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Dreamplug ethernet issues on: March 30, 2011, 06:35:15 AM
I am also having the issue with the unit not recognizing the that an ethernet cable has been attached after boot up. The ethernet connection only seems to be recognized if it is attached before boot up.
20  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Dreamplug Bogomips on: March 28, 2011, 01:29:12 PM
I read a FAQ about Bogomips at <http://tldp.org/HOWTO/BogoMips/bogo-faq.html>

It seems to say that Bogomips should not be used as a benchmark. I'll try to look at my Dreamplug and see what its Bogomips value is.
21  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: I just received a new Dreamplug today on: March 26, 2011, 10:40:10 PM
My Dreamplug came with U-Boot 2010.06 and Debian 5.0.3
22  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: Dreamplug working as a squeezeboxserver on: March 19, 2011, 07:43:07 AM
Thanks for the help. Right now I am stressing my Dreamplug by running three Squeezebox type players off of it at once. I am going to let them run over the weekend and then see how the system heats up / handles the load.

For a long time I used a Sheevaplug but wanted a unit with a built in wifi AP to run the squeezebox server on and recently the Dreamplug came out.

Then by strange coincidence today I got an email that the Squeezebox Boom and Duet are on sale from amazon with a $35 rebate on the boom! I am ordering 2 more booms right now!

Isn't it weird how sometimes the universe aligns itself to make us happy?  Grin
23  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Dreamplug working as a squeezeboxserver on: March 18, 2011, 09:53:38 PM
I was able to restore the Debian 5.0.3 original system onto a 16 GB SD card. Then I took that card and created a FAT32 partition on it and then copied some MP3s from my Mac onto the partition. I installed Squeezeboxserver and the Dreamplug now functions as a music server that creates its own wifi access point.

I have a squeezebox boom that intend to use in my workplace with the Dreamplug sitting in a corner somewhere.

I've been testing the system and tinkering with it and have got it working perfectly for the app that I wanted to use it for. My only concern is that I noticed after a short time testing the system that the SD card got really hot in the Dreamplug. I amo not sure that the card will last if it gets heated up. I'll try to test it out this weekend and see how it goes.

Does anyone know how we can change the name of the wifi access point that the Dreamplug sets up?

Is there a way to make Debian automatically log on to an account? Is this something we can do with a boot parameter? Right now my Dreamplug boots up and then shows a login prompt but the squeezeboxserver is running even tho no one is logged into the box.

Thanks for any help.
24  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Dreamplug rootfs gets full on: March 18, 2011, 03:22:07 AM
I haven't done much with my dreamplug but the rootfs is 99% full! I thought deleting stuff in /var/log would help but it didn't help much. Anyone know what might be using up disk space?

Thanks for any help
25  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Using the Dreamplug repository on: March 17, 2011, 07:48:50 PM
I tried to use the files in the Dreamplug repository but I could not get it to work. This is what I did:

1) formatted a USB drive with a fat partition and an ext2 partition
2) copied the uImage file into the fat partition
3) copied the files from the dreeamplug_rootfs archive into the ext2 partition
4) changed uboot to fatload the uImage from the usb stick
5) changed uboot to boot from the usb drives ext2 partition

Booting starts but ends with a kernel panic that says:
Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found.  Try passing init= option to kernel.

Does anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks for any help.
26  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Where is the Dreamplug debian repository? on: March 17, 2011, 07:35:57 PM
Do you know where there might be a repository for the Debian distro that came with the Dreamplug? I think I have messed up the files on my internal SD card.

Thanks for any help.
27  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: I just got my Dreamplug on: March 17, 2011, 02:48:08 PM
I've used saveenv and set it to boot off an 16 GB SD card. I want to use the unit as a squeezeboxserver using its wireless network. So far I haven't gotten it to work.
28  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: dreamplug questions on: March 17, 2011, 02:46:00 PM
That is all mine came with. Initially I thought that something was missing too. Then I looked at the website pictures of the unit and saw that the cable would go from the part that has the power prongs to the actual unit when they are separated. I would recommend that you back up the internal microSD card.
29  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Dreamplug repo different from shipping Dreamplug system on: March 17, 2011, 12:12:19 PM
I extracted the Dreamplug repository and found that etc/debian_version contains "5.0" but my Dreamplug shipped with "5.0.3"

The repository software seems different from what my Dreamplug shipped with.

Does anyone know exactly how to use the repository? Do I just take a USB flash drive and then create two partitions on it and then install uImage into the FAT partition and then copy the repository files into an ext2 partition and then run the dreamplug using boot parameters set to read from the USB drive?

Is it that easy?
30  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Repositroy of Dreamplug software on: March 16, 2011, 07:30:22 PM
<http://code.google.com/p/dreamplug/downloads/list> has downloads with the Dreamplug kernel, uboot and rootfs

I was a bit confused though to see the rootfs separated into three ~ 99 MB files.

Why did they do that?
