Hi there,

yes I had the same problem, nothing described in this thread could solve the problem. Finally I tried to reset the Plug using the installer (have a look at the wiki). Afterwards I tried the whole routine as described by Martin Michlmayr and suprisingly that worked out. I did not update anything before installing Debian and had no problems by then. Maybe you could give it a try?

thanks for your reaction but I still don't want to accept that the device is broken. As long as I run the pre-installed Ubuntu, the USB port works fine. As soon as Debian is installed I cannot use that port.

I had to reinstall Debian onto the SDHC card to check the commands. When enterting lsusb without USB device plugged in I receive the message:

Inserting an USB stick doesn't change the message. Plugging in my USB hard drive it doesn't even starts.

I had to reinstall Debian onto the SDHC-Card first (Sandisk 4GB). But the problem is the same, as soon as the boot sequence says "... done, booting the kernel" the hard drive turns off. When Debian is booted I cannot access any USB device I plug in. It seems like the port is simply not recognized. Maybe it has something to do with different manufactured plugs? Is there a chance to compare the hardware?

The uImage can be found at the same location.

This is taken from the filesystem using the "manual" method. When trying to use the installer, it simply cannot find the USB drive for partitioning. Installing onto an SDHC card work fine anyhow.

thanks for replying!

I'm using an ICYBOX case with a 500GB hard drive. I also tried the same procedure with two USB sticks (2 and 8GB), encountering the same problems. When entering the U-Boot the drive is running, LEDs are flashing and I can access it.

I followed your instructions and loaded the uInitrd and uImage from my TFTP server. As soon as I start the installer the USB drive shuts down, LEDs go out and the installer cannot find the drive. When resetting the drive turns on again.

Same problem when installing Debian to an SDHC card. The installation routine works perfectly, but when plugging in the USB drive it isn't recognizes as soon as the kernel started. I cannot see any device when typing lsusb in Debian.

As mentioned before it is possible to use the same USB devices when running Ubuntu. Also putting Ubuntu onto the hard disc everything works as expected.

Do you have an idea, how to make the installer/kernel using the USB port? I would appreciate any help!

I tried to install Debian today but still the installer couldn't recognize my USB devices. As soon as the kernel boots the USB port turns off.

Is it possible that the installer kernel doesn't work with all devices? Can I try it with another one?

I tried it over and over again, but as soon as the Debian kernel starts (installer and tar ball) the usb devices shut down. With Ubuntu everything works fine.

The installation routine went fine and Debian runs from SD-card, but I still cannot use the USB port when the Kernel started.

One more information that could help to locate the problem. When using the standard Ubuntu distribution that comes with the plug the USB port seems to work pretty fine, the stick and the drive are recognized.

Is it possible that my plug has a problem with the kernel? As soon as the kernel is started the USB devices turn off.

I already tried a new installation from scratch but when the installer starts the stick/drive immediately turns off.

Maybe it can be fixed with some other environmental paramters? My current parameters are:

Hi guys,

I have a strange problem with my advice: after installing Debian with Martin's guide (everything went fine) I wanted to use some USB devices on the plug. But when inserting the devices nothing seems to happen.

But when I restart the plug the USB devices do get recognized. I tried an USB stick and hard drive which where giving flashing lights when plugged in, but as soon as the kernel starts, the lights turn off and the devices cannot be accessed.

I think something turns off the the USB port, which works fine until the kernel starts.

Does anybody have an idea what to do?

That's what I expected the first place as well. This is the reason why I tried it with a simple USB stick, but the result is still the same. When running the Plug with Jaunty from the hard drive it already worked. But with Debian I get the problem described above... I'm getting nuts...  Tongue

P.S.: I just realized that after turning off the drive the usb port seems to have no power any more. When plugging it out and in again it doesn't turn on again. I have to reboot before the Plug is able to find the device again...

P.P.S.: I tried the whole procedure again with an 2GB USB stick, but with the same result... It seems that the port is not reacting any more when trying to start the kernel. Any ideas?

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to inform you, that I received the replacement unit after sending an error description to GTI. Although they had to send it overseas I didn't have to send it back to them, they immediately sent the replacement without hesitation! Thank you very much for that service!

So if anybody experiences the same problem, maybe this can help!
