1  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: Male connector for GuruPlug UART/JTAG ports on: October 30, 2010, 01:15:57 PM
We used a FTDI USB-Serial chip (like what you find at sparkfun.com). It accepts 3.3-level UART so there was nothing else needed.

It sounds like we have different goals. I just wanted access to the TTL-level UART signals TX, RX, and GND. If you want access to the JTAG signals you will have to go to a lot of hassle to *maybe* save $10 over the official JTAG connector that Global Scale offers.

We used the 4-position female housing connector:

with these connection terminals:

Here is the way overpriced hand crimp tool that we did NOT buy:

We just looked at the datasheet for the crimper which shows in detail how the connectors should be crimped and carefully copied that by bending the connectors with tiny flat blade screwdrivers and hemostats. Good luck!

Yep, this connector worked for me and UART connection is up and running!

Thanks for the photos! I think I found what I was looking for on Digikey. I'll report back.

2-pin plug - $0.32:

4-pin plug - $0.46:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=WM1722-ND

8-pin plug - $0.70:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=WM1726-ND

Crimp sockets for 28-32 AWG wire - $0.59 for 10:

If you look at the datasheet for the (expensive!) crimp tool, there's a detailed view of how a crimped socket is supposed to look:

6  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Male connector for GuruPlug UART/JTAG ports on: July 27, 2010, 05:31:29 AM
I didn't pay for the overpriced JTAG box that Globalscales sells as an option with the GuruPlug. Now I'm trying to get serial console access to the 4-pin 3.3V UART connector. Has any one been successful in finding a male connector for this port (e.g. on Digikey)? If anyone has a hi-res photo of the actual UART connector that comes on the official JTAG breakout box, that would be very helpful!

unaiur,

Did you ever have success interfacing with the UART on the GuruPlug? If so, could you post the pinout of the cabling you used?

Thanks!
