Please attach a full serial console dump once you have it.

So how can we really make things easier? I'm looking for practical things we can do.

Note that the wiki pages are getting more and more information; I agree with you that today's information is mostly when things work fine and less when disaster happens.

There is an openocd (open source project) support for the plug.
The connectivity is simply using the same usb cable.
I haven't seen a wiki explaining how; but I know people have already tried it (timtim on #openplug IRC channel at freenode).

I just use standard kernel with any standard distro.
It should have the ftdi chip drivers.
