Right now my GuruPlug autonegotiates the wired connection to 1000FD.  I'd like to set it to 100FD.  How do I make that change permanent?  I have ethtool and mii-tool at my disposal.  I've seen a few different ways to do this but I can't seen to get any to work.

I totally agree.  I think the case is the root of all the heat problems.  They keep trying to cram everything into that little case but it just doesn't work out well as it's designed.  Personally I could care less about the tiny size of the case but it increases the wow factor in the marketing - as long as they don't turn it on   It's all the other features of the GP that I bought it for.  The fan is only about 1mm behind the usb ports and most of it is covered by the ports so a lot of the noise may be due to very poor airflow.  There's also no venting on the other end of the case so the air can't escape efficiently.  The solution is obviously just a quick fix rather than fixing it properly.  Too bad - nice product otherwise.

The second SD card slot was installed when I got it.  What you see above is the latest version of the GuruPlug Server Plus completely unmodified.

I would have hoped to see the fan at least be temperature controlled but that doesn't appear to be the case.  It runs full speed all the time.  I think they would have been much better off with a redesigned case - even a bit bigger if they needed it - to get a better fan in there with the right heatsink and venting.  I don't care about the size.  What I care about is all the features and low power consumption.  The automatic booting on power-up is a great option too that makes this a great device for a remote situation when there's a power outage.  Ultimately I could see myself just abandoning this case altogether.

On the plus side it worked perfect out of the box.  Fired it up and it came up as a Wifi AP right away.  Connected my laptop wirelessly, logged in, plugged in an eSATA drive, and away I went.  Nice little unit if this heat issue gets properly straightened out some day.  I'd like to see them touting this at CES or something with that fan running.  It won't be received very well.

I'll play around with some other features like the SD slots, etc tonight and see how that works.

The fan is a Sunon Maglev KD0520PEB2-8.  The tech specs are at http://www.sunon.com.tw/products/pdf/maglev.pdf.  If you decode the model number using that document it's 5V, 20mmx20mmx6mm, ball-bearing, mid-speed, 2 wire.  I've seen 20mm fans in the 21-23dba sound range in a quick search online.  I  don't know how much this one is but it seems a lot higher than that.

Here's some pictures of the inside.  The fan is behind the USB/eSATA ports.  it appears to blow air into the power supply.

Same problem here.  It sounds like a small hair dryer.  I'll take some pictures and post.

I just got mine as well.  I can't see any difference in the case but that new fan is really noisy.  My PC with the multiple fans in it doesn't make nearly this much noise.  I haven't played with it yet to see if it adjusts speed according to the temperature inside like the PC does.

Called them again after Aug 24th came and went with no word on the supposed shipment... now I'm being fed a line about delays in customs and shipping starts Sept 7th.  If no tracking number shows up by then I give up and will be getting a refund.  The project I wanted it for is almost past anyways.

I called them a few days ago and was told that a shipment of the newly redeisgned version of the plug was arriving on Aug24th and they would probably start shipping Aug 25th.  Who knows if that will happen but at least it's a lot more definite than things I've been told in the past.
