1  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / Hardware / Re: GuruPlug versus SheevaPlug on: February 25, 2010, 10:55:23 AM

Do you know if NewIT has plans to do an offer similar to GST's (free JTAG for early orders)?
Cause if they don't, it could be more interesting for us Europeans to pay more for shipping and duty by ordering from GST (if their website comes back Wink), if the JTAG module is free!

New IT have now added the Guruplug standard and plus (but NOT the Guruplug Display) in their online shop, and allow preorders. Deliveries are scheduled for April.

http://www.newit.co.uk/shop/products.php?cat=11 (click on "details" for the free JTAG offer)

AND, they too have a free JTAG offer : "All preorders for GuruPlug paid for by 14/3/2010 will receive 1 free JTAG module per order".
Notice the "per order" (not "per guruplug"), which makes sense, in a way - in most cases, one JTAG module per user is enough.

best regards,
Alf

My understanding is that NewIT doesn't plan to make free JTAG offer.

Also, my understanding is that there are other differences between NewIT and Globalscale, beyond the cost of shipping. In general, NewIT is much more bent on customer support than GST is. With GST, they get your money and send you the plugs when available. In between, you are mostly left in the dark, your e-mails go unanswered etc. With NewIT, you send a mail and get a polite, precise reply within a few hours (timezone differences permitting).

This difference in CS policy is probably the reason why NewIT don't offer the free JTag box (in order to do so they would probably have to start selling guruplugs before getting them, possibly before even having seen them - something I suspect they don't want to do).

So the choice is really, get a pleasant buying experience from NewIT or a free JTag box from GST.

Looks like the Globalscale site is back up now, but it also looks like the GuruPlug Display (the one with the HDMI interface in it) just got a tad more expensive, and pre-ordering it no longer gets you a free JTAG!
the Free JTag offer is still (or again?) in the GST site.

It's not to me yet clear what kernel actually ships with the ESATA enabled plugs.

As I have received an esata plug a couple of days ago, the answer is just a boot away:

root@debian:~# uname -r
2.6.22.18

Hi all,

I received my esata plug a few days ago. I have also bought an el cheapo 2,5" e-sata case, which uses the Genesys Logic GL830 IC. Haven't tried it yet, as no free sata drive available yet. Any guesses on whether it will work?

Best regards,
Alf
