121  General Category / General Discussion / It comes with Debian preinstalled? on: December 31, 2009, 05:09:19 PM
I got my Sheevaplug today. Smiley Plugged it in and ssh'd into it.. It identifies itself as "debian".. Have they switched to preinstalling Debian on these things now? I'm reading through the Wiki right now, noticed it says it would have Ubuntu on it.. Might need to update that. Smiley I plan to do a fresh install on an 8gb SD card anyways..
I love how the "Warranty Void if broken" sticker was only stuck to one side of the case.. So I can pop the thing open without voiding the warranty if I feel like it.. Wink hahaha..
I decided not to fight with the USB-serial drivers on OSX and just fired up XP in VMWare. Smiley

There it is on my left speaker.. Smiley

I am using the latest Debian (squeeze) off internal flash with no problems.  I tried switching to Debian on an 8GB Class 6 SDHC, but the resulting system was way too slow.  I quickly jumped back to using the internal flash.
Something seriously doesn't add up there. It was either a chinese fake from eBay or the like, or you formatted it in a completely different file system, one that doesn't perform well on solid state memory.
Me, I just picked up a 8gb class 4, I fully intend to make it my main drive, and leave the onboard drive alone. I wanted a class 6, but I'm cheap. Wink No point getting such a cheap computer and spending almost that much again on the storage medium. Smiley

Mine shipped today. Sorry if my whining got one someone's nerves. Looks like it'll be my New Years day gift.. Smiley

I admit, I was tempted to hit smite just to watch you explode some more.. Smiley But since someone gave me negative, and I don't feel I've been negative yet, you may have a point.. I gave you a +.. Smiley
I looked under my Christmas Tree this morning, and cried a little inside, as another week had gone by (4 weeks now), and I have no gift to open. If only they had said 5-6 weeks instead of 2-3, I'd have gotten it ordered sooner, I just didn't want to have it sitting there tempting me for an extra month..

I agree, especially since this thing is so energy efficient, it'd be great for this sort of thing.

Yes, you can run SDHC cards, I haven't seen them over 32gb, they start getting very pricey above 16gb, but you can get them in 32gb. Make sure you get Class 6 rather than Class 4.. There are also some called "Extreme III", I believe those are above even class 6 in speed, but it's one particular brand's trademark.
You can put the OS on the SDHC as the main drive, or you can span the main drive onto the SDHC.. I'd just leave the main drive unused as a modern SDHC card is going to run circles around it, and if you were to wear it out, it's easy to replace.

128  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Sheevaplug - Ubuntu 9.10 - Wine - Mercury32 EMail Server ?? on: December 18, 2009, 04:20:34 PM
Wine runs the windows apps natively, and simply provides the libraries and such that those apps are expecting. As such, x86 apps will not run on an ARM CPU..

Lovely.. How long ago did you order/get yours? Looks like they've shipped two batches since my order was placed. Apparently so far behind that they couldn't ship mine in either batch.. Looks like they're shipping a new batch every 2 weeks now, I hope to be on the next batch out..

131  General Category / General Discussion / 4+ weeks, no sign of my plug.. :( on: December 16, 2009, 06:38:45 PM
Was hoping to get my plug in time for Christmas, so we ordered it something like a month and a half early. Globalwhatsit indicates 2-3 weeks delivery time on their site. It's been 3 weeks and there's no sign of it having even shipped yet. They also don't seem to be answering their emails. Is there another US source? I can just reverse the charges on my credit card and have it overnighted from someone more reliable..
