1  Linux Stuff / General Linux questions / Re: Log files... how to keep them from growing too long? on: December 19, 2009, 03:27:07 PM
as cxbiker61 explains, logrotate will periodically compress your log files. since log files are text, they compress well. i run a syslog server off my plug, and the /var/log directory is at 11 megs after being in operation for 2 months. it will probably stay at around this size, since i have configured logrotate to keep a sliding window of 1 week of logs.

I had to append rootdelay=10 to my bootcmd. seems like it takes a few seconds to start sending power to the usb disk in some cases, so just waiting does the trick. some more info at https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/kernel-boot-usb-roodelay
3  Linux Stuff / Kernel / Re: Kernel 2.6.32 Crypto on: December 06, 2009, 01:51:26 PM
this is and interesting thread. i compiled 2.6.32 with the CRYPTO_DEV_MV_CESA =y , but i don't have a /dev/crypto device. upon further research, i found http://www.logix.cz/michal/devel/cryptodev/, which has a simple c program to enable the /dev/crypto device. Unfortunately, it requires a modular kernel which i don't have. I may look into this over the next few days and post back if i find anything. However it does seem like using the HW crypto requires patching userpace tools too.
4  Linux Stuff / Kernel / Kernel 2.6.32 release on: December 06, 2009, 09:47:07 AM
Since  cbxbiker61 hasn't posted 2.6.32 yet, I thought I'd build my own. Download here:

http://binsh.net/sheeva/

This kernel has loadable module support disabled. It's intended to be a minimal kernel that works for my setup. If you need IPv6, NFS, JFS, XFS, appletalk or wireless, please wait for cbxbiker61 to update his site.

Cheers,
