1  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Globalscale Technologies Advice Please? on: January 07, 2010, 10:58:26 AM
Strange situation.  Here in UK/Europe we have mostly used UK-based NewIT who seem to work very hard in support of plug computing - delivery is quick (less than 24 hours for me) and after sales service is excellent.  Where do they get their plugs from - Globalscale.

2  Linux Stuff / Linux distributions / Re: Do you still need to install the SheevaPlug Installer if you just bought a Plug? on: January 01, 2010, 01:39:27 PM
Hi,

I held off going down the Installer route for a couple of weeks - partly because I wanted to get the hang of the plug, u-boot etc and also because of the number of problems reported on in the installer thread.

Bit the bullet and installed Debian squeeze (thanks to mgillespie) on both the nand and an SD card.  Both went very easily, and now the plug can multiboot either.  Both now boot very cleanly and quickly.

I did the installs from a linux environment with two terminals open, one running cu -s 115200 -l /dev/ttyUSB0
talking to the plug and the other running the install script.  Before the install I did an apt-get install ftdi php5-cli.  With two terminals it was possible to monitor what was going on all the time - which thankfully was error free and didn't produce any of the problems reported in the thread.

3  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / U-Boot stuff / Re: Howto copy debian on an usb-stick to a sd-card and boot from that? on: December 29, 2009, 01:13:03 PM
Hi,

I used the instructions in  http://thesalmonfarm.org/blog/2008/01/16/how-to-make-a-backup-image-of-an-usb-stick-or-sd-card/ to backup my SD card onto a USB stick of the same size.  The backing-up was done onto a USB hard disc connected to the Sheeva plug; the backup file was then 'bunzipped2' onto the USB stick using a linux pc - bit convoluted as I cannot connect the USB hard disc and stick to the sheeva simultaneously.

Worked a treat - if /etc/fstab is written using UUIDs in place of /dev/sda or /dev/mmcblk0 then no changes are required - it will pick up the partitions perfectly.  All that was required was a change to the u-boot environmental parameters to pick up the USB in place of the SD card

It should would just as well going the other way.

HTH
