1  General Category / General Discussion / udevd[645]: unable to receive ctrl connection: Function not implemented on: October 29, 2011, 04:36:56 PM
This is what happened, very frustrating indeed. I was troubleshooting my Dockstar not able to boot from a microsd card, so I decided to use my Guruplug to see what's going on with the card. My Guruplug, which is running rootfs from a microsd card can not seem to detect the external microsd card as well. So I have decided to upgrade my udev (the decision that I regretted a lot). I issued -

apt-get install udev

and blah blah blah, it installed a lot of stuff which I don't even know, as I am not a Linux guru. After I restarted my guruplug, I got the error showed in the subject. I Googled and found some postings saying that udev does not work well with external USB drives. For my case, it is definitely an issue, as I run everything on USB drives. I have actually 5 USB flash drives (all microsds), including the rootfs. I can not fixed it as I can not even login to the server via JTAG due to udevd 645 errors! Any help/idea how to work around this will be highly appreciated.

My JTAG console if it helps -

I followed your advise and the following are the output. Please let me know if I need to perform anything else to fix it. Thanks.

3  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / U-Boot stuff / Boot rootfs from 32GB microsd? on: June 20, 2011, 05:18:39 PM
Is there anyway to boot from 32 GB microsd card? I followed the instructions from http://plugcomputer.org/plugwiki/index.php/SD_Card_As_Root_File_System and I got the following error. Any kind soul mind helping? Thanks.

/var/log is only around 6MB, but localepurge helped to cut another 33MB! Thanks for that. There are still another 200 to 250 MB unaccounted for. I used some script to scan for largest files, could not find any suspicious candidate to remove.

Might it be that there are thousands of small files lying somewhere that I do not know how to scan for?
5  General Category / General Discussion / Re: rootfs size on: April 29, 2011, 04:30:37 PM
It showed 178MB.  Almost accounts for the "missing" space, can I remove anything under /var?

Thanks.
6  General Category / General Discussion / Re: rootfs size on: April 29, 2011, 03:57:49 PM
I am new to Linux too. So this is another question.  I noticed when I started couples of weeks back, the rootfs / was around 250MB. I performed multiple soft links e.g.

ln -s /media/usb0 /disk1

ln -s /media/usb1 /disk2

ln -s /media/usb3 /disk3

I remove some of the above USBs, but I don't think I unmount it properly. Could that contributed to some extra large file (corruption) in the rootfs?

Thanks for any insight.
7  General Category / General Discussion / rootfs size on: April 29, 2011, 11:27:02 AM
I am not sure I remember correctly, but I read before that the total size of a brand new guruplug server plus's root directory i.e. / is like 250MB. Mine is like 500MB, do you know what could have occupied so much space?

Thanks.

Oh well, finally it came up. I think I have removed some usb drives which are not in the USB slots anymore, going to add them back and try to reboot again. Will update again once everything is back up Smiley
9  Hardware and U-Boot firmware / U-Boot stuff / Re: NET: Registered protocol family 10 on: April 27, 2011, 02:50:53 PM
I followed http://plugcomputer.org/plugforum/index.php?topic=1642.15 mainly -

 #fdisk /dev/sdb
   press "o"  / create a new partition table
   press "n"  / create a new partition
   press "p"  / it's a primary partition
   press "1"  / partition #1
   press enter / default first cylinder
   press enter / default last cylinder
   press "a"  / set the boot flag
   press "1" / ... for partition #1
   press "w" / save changes

#mkfs -t  ext3 /dev/sdb1
#mkdir /mnt/sdcard
#mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdcard

2) copy files of Guruplug into microSD as:
#cp -axv / /mnt/sdcard
#cp -av /dev /mnt/sdcard
 By about two steps, the bootable microSD is available

3)  The next is how to boot the microSD,  do
#ls -l /dev/sd*
brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 8,  0 2009-08-08 16:48 /dev/sda
brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 8, 16 2009-08-08 16:48 /dev/sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 8, 17 2009-08-08 16:48 /dev/sdb1
the major and minor device numbers for /dev/sdb1′ which I put the rootfs on, are 8 and 17 respectively.
That number needs to be converted to hex, for entry in Uboot -- 8,17 in decimal converts to 8,11 in Hex,
for entry in Uboot this will be entered as 0811′.

4) Reboot the GuruPlug and this time hit any key before the system boots into Debian. Once at the Marvell prompt type:
Marvell>> nand read.e 0x6400000 0x100000 0x400000
Marvell>> setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=0811 rootdelay=10
Marvell>> bootm 0x6400000

and I changed as you advised like the following -

nand read.e 0x6400000 0x100000 0x400000
setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=0811 rootdelay=10
setenv bootargs_root 'root=/dev/sdb1 rootwait'
bootm 0x6400000

and I am still stuck at the last line, any idea what I should do now?

Thanks for your prompt reply Smiley

>First you need to clarify your intention, you said you want to "boot from SD", do you mean you want the rootfs load from SD or you want u-boot load kernel from SD?
My rootfs was full. So I was thinking to boot my rootfs from SD, I am not interested in booting the kernel from SD (what is the benefits by the way? Shocked).

Yes, I have not change the /etc/fstab, as I am not able to get into the OS. I think if I boot using single mode, I will get the root prompt and will be able to change the fstab?

Ok, I messed up as I was trying to change Guruplug Server plus to boot from SD card but it didn't work. And I did not jot down the settings that I have for my guruplug, now it does not boot at all and stuck at "NET: Registered protocol family 10". I would like to revert back to factory defaults, booting from the usual NAND. How do I do that? Could any kind soul in this forum send me the correct uboot commands to type?

My current printenv is -

Marvell>> printenv
bootdelay=3
baudrate=115200
x_bootcmd_usb=usb start
x_bootcmd_kernel=nand read.e 0x6400000 0x100000 0x400000

mainlineLinux=no
run_diag=no
stdin=serial
stdout=serial
stderr=serial

Environment size: 668/131068 bytes

And these were what I did before the hanging reboot -

Marvell>> setenv bootcmd '${x_bootcmd_usb}; ${x_bootcmd_kernel}; setenv bootargs ${x_bootargs} ${x_bootargs_root}; bootm 0x6400000;'

I have used Guruplug Server plus for about a month now, no complain. Saw the heat issue before purchased it, so I run portable usb fan since day one.

Love it! Smiley

Might consider buying Dreamplug too.
